All
ATMs older than Jan., 2004, should be checked to see if they are
3 DES compliant. After Dec. 31, 2006, they will cease to work if
not compliant.
1.
What is Triple DES?
Triple
DES is the use of the DES algorithm three (3) times using two (or
three) 16-byte encryption keys for the encryption of PIN Block data.
It has been mandated by MasterCard and VISA to replace the current
single DES algorithm.
2.
How does it affect my ATM, or my organization?
All ATM's
we sell new are Triple DES compliant.
After
December 31, 2006, all ATM's nationwide must be compliant. An ATM
that is not compliant after December 31, will no longer be able
to process any transactions. ATM terminals must be capable of supporting
Triple DES and must have Triple DES keys installed.
Before December 31, 2006, all ATMs not capable of Triple DES have
to be upgraded. Some machines cannot be upgraded. If you or your
organization has an ATM that needs upgraded, do it now. Don't wait
if possible. ATM technicians
across the US have told us that waiting until the end of the year
will backlog the parts and technicians that are available.
There could be a lengthy delay into 2007, causing the ATM to be
down until upgraded. Avoid downtime, upgrade soon!
Not
all machines can be 3DES upgraded.
3.
I still do not understand what the upgrades do and what Triple DES
is.
Triple
DES is an algorithm. Imagine a 16 digit math and letter code. (Remember
a million is 7 digits) Triple DES keeps the information inside your
machine and the data it sends secure. A hacker with a computer can
break the code and gain entrance, however it would take years.
Triple DES is doing this three times. Now a hacker would have to
try for many years, and probably never gain entrance. According
to MasterCard and VISA, Triple DES is more secure than single DES.
The
upgrades usually include at least a keypad upgrade. Some need a
monitor, or software. After the Triple DES upgrade, an ATM will
no longer show the entire credit or debit card number when printing
the electronic journal. It will only show the last four digits.
It has been mandated by MasterCard and VISA that all ATM's will
not store a record of the entire credit card and debit number.
Credit card and debit card holders demanded that their credit card
numbers be hidden to fight identity theft. MasterCard and VISA agreed.
The electronic journal of an ATM is for the ATM owner's records.
It is proof of showing when a card number was used to withdraw money
from an ATM.
In the case of a dispute, it shows if money was dispensed correctly.
ATM cardholder disputes require a copy of your journal for proof.
We
have a few solutions for Triple DES upgrades. One ATM manufacturer
is offering free upgrades on certain machines through us if the
ATM
converts to their processing. There is no added cost for processing,
but upgrades that could cost you hundreds of dollars will cost you
zero!
